METROPOLIS, together with Brussels and Barcelona, Organizes a Parallel Session at the international event of UN Women
“Digital Urban Women: Digital Empowerment of Women for a True Urban Transformation”is the title of the good practices round table which METROPOLIS is organizing together with the Brussels-Capital Region and Barcelona City Council’s Department of Women and Civil Rights. The event, to be held on 11 March from 10 am to 1.30 pm in the Hotel One United Nations Plaza in New York, is part of the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
The parallel session, jointly presided by Ms Bianca Debaets, Secretary of State for Equal Opportunities at Brussels-Capital Region and Ms Francina Vila, Barcelona City Council’s Counselor for Women and Civil Rights and President of the METROPOLIS Women International Network, will explore the following issues:
- Challenges facing cities and their women
- Challenges facing women, particularly in urban centers
- Opportunities for the digital empowerment of women to shape the cityscape

The Metropolis Women International Network will take advantage of this annual international meeting dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women to hold an internal antennae meeting on the morning of Thursday 12 March. The members will also visit representatives of UN Women and other international organizations to promote the Network’s activities.
The organizers of the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59), where representatives of the UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality will also be present, expect around 9,000 delegates from across the world to attend the multiple sessions to be held in the US city between 9 and 20 March, straight after International Women’s Day (8 March). This year, the event will also commemorate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
