Joan Clos to chair “Safe Cities in the Field of Public Space and Gender” course
The Metropolis International Women’s Network, together with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the Barcelona County Council and UN-Habitat organize the course entitled “Safe cities within the sphere of public space and gender” scheduled to take place next Wednesday, 3 April 2013 in Barcelona.
The event, which will include the presence of United Nations Under-Secretary General and UN Habitat Executive Director Joan Clos, aims to be a forum of debate about the concept of urban security, the perception of safety and citizens’ rights such as freedom of movement and use of the city and the keys for developing municipal urban security policies with a gender perspective. The congress also enjoys the support of Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council, the Government of Catalonia’s Women’s Institute and UN-Habitat.
When tackling the issue of urban security, it is essential to use a gender approach to gain an understanding of the different needs and experiences facing women and men with regard to their personal safety in order to provide greater security for all citizens as a whole. In its declarations in Brussels in 2007 and in Seoul in 2009, the Metropolis International Women’s Network established a series of actions and policies for gender equality in cities, and encouraged its members to disseminate them through their policy agendas throughout their territories.
